When Sayyadah Mariam was born, Maulana Sheikh Ibrahim Niass was expecting a boy, he however predicted her future life in a brief sentence as follows....

"...إنني كنت أتوقع أن يكون لي ولد ، لكنها ستعيش ويكون لها مكانها بين الرجال ، وتتنافس معهم على المعرفة والاحترام والتقوى..."

"....I was expecting to have a boy, but nevertheless, she will grow to have her own place among men (to be intellectually independent) and compete with them base on knowledge, honor and piety..."

My fellow reader, just take a short 'tour' with me through these paragraphs to the end and judge by yourself whether what her father Baye Niass  had prophesied and predicted (as a waliyi/saint) about her came to fruition in her life....

And reflect upon the commonality between her international prominence and recognition and that of her father...You would see why the Arabs would say...!كيف ماكان المربي يكون المربى

أعلن اليوم في السينغال عن رحيل خادمة القرآن الكريم السيدة مريم بنت الشيخ ابراهيم انياس شخصية صوفية سنغالية، ارتبط اسمها بتدريس القرآن الكريم حتى لـُـقبت محليا "خادمة القرآن". والدها هو الشيخ إبراهيم انياس الذي يعتبر أحد أبرز شيوخ التصوف بغربي أفريقيا.

The death of the "Servant of the Qur'an" Sayyadah Mariam daughter of Sheikh Ibrahim Niass was announced today in Senegal. As a devoted Senegalese sufi personality, her named was linked to teaching the holy Qur'an to the extent of giving an alias "Servant of the Qur'an". Her father was Sheikh Ibrahim Niass, who was considered as one of the prominent Sheikhs of sufi order in west Africa.

المولد والنشأة

ولدت مريم بنت إبراهيم انياس بن عبد الله الكولخي يوم 24 ديسمبر/كانون الأول عام 1934 في مدينة كولخ السنغالية، لأسرة علمية صوفية ذات تأثير مجتمعي كبير لكونها والدها شخصية علمية بارزة ويتزعم فرعا كبيرا من الطريقة التجانية الصوفية.

Birth & Upbringing 

Sayyadah Mariam Ibrahim Niass bun Abdallah was born on December 24, 1934 in Madinatu Kaolack, Senegal from a knowledge and sufi oriented family, which is of huge societal impact and it leads a huge constituence of the followers of Tijjani sufi path.

 الدراسة والتكوين

التحقت مريم انياس في سن مبكرة بمدرسة لتعليم القرآن وهي مدرسة أسسها والدها في مدينة كولخ فحفظت القرآن الكريم وهي في 13 من عمرها، وبعد حفظه بدأت دراسة اللغة العربية والعلوم الإسلامية على والدها الشيخ إبراهيم نياس.

Education & Training 

Sayydah Mariam Niass was enrolled into the school established by her father in Madinatu Kaolack at a very early age to learn the Qur'an and she memorized the holy Qur'an at 13 years of age. So after her memorization (of the Qur'an), she started learning Arabic language and Islamic knowledge under the supervision of her father Sheikh Ibrahim Niass.

أصبحت عام 1950 مدرِّسة للقرآن الكريم في "مدرسة شيخ الإسلام" بمدينة الشيخ إبراهيم نياس التي تُعرف اختصارا بـ"مدينة"، وأسست بعد انتقالها إلى العاصمة داكار للاستقرار مع زوجها هناك سنة 1960 مدرسة قرآنية في منزلها، وكانت تشرف بنفسها على تدريس أطفال الحي الذي تسكنه، ثم تحولت المدرسة إلى قبلة رئيسية للعشرات من أطفال داكار الراغبين في تعلم القرآن الكريم.

In 1950, she became a teacher of the holy Qur'an in the "School of Sheikhul Islam" in Madinatu Kaolack Sheikh Ibrahim Niass which is shortly known as "Madinah". And after she moved to Dakar in 1960, she established a Quranic school in her home. So she devoted herself teaching the kids and children of the neighborhood she lives in. Then the school was transformed into a major learning center for tens of children of Dakar, willing to learn the holy Qur'an.

التجربة الدعوية

قامت مريم انياس سنة 1975 بإنشاء مؤسسة أهلية لتعليم القرآن الكريم أطلقت عليها "دار القرآن الكريم"، وقد ساهم الدعم المالي الذي تلقته من أمراء ورجال أعمال خليجيين لاحقا في توسعة المدرسة، إذ تقدر طاقتها الاستيعابية بحوالي 1600 طالب (حسب معطيات المؤسسة لعام 2014).

Da'awah (Deen Advocacy) Experience

Sayydah Mariam had established a civil society institution for teaching the holy Qur'an and named it "Darul Qur'anul Kareem". In fact she had obtained financial support from kings and businessmen in the gulf regions (including Saudi Arabia) for the school expansion project.

Her students capacity was estimated at about 1600 (according to the 2014 foundation data).

وقد خرجت المدرسة على مدار السنوات الأخيرة المئات من حملة القرآن الكريم من السنغال ودول أفريقية مجاورة مثل غامبيا وغينيا بيساو. ويأتي طلبة "دار القرآن الكريم" في "طليعة" الطلبة الأفارقة الذين يشاركون في المسابقات الدولية لتحفيظ القرآن الكريم.

Hundreds of students from Senegal and from neighboring Africa nations like Gambia and Guinea Bissau who had memorized the holy Qur'an have graduated from the school in the past years. And the students of "Darul Qur'anul Kareem" would always be outstanding or at the forefront among the African students who would participate in the international Quranic competitions for memorization of the holy Qur'an.

لم يتوقف جهد مريم انياس في نشر الثقافة الإسلامية والعربية في البلاد على تأسيس مدرسة "دار القرآن الكريم"، بل وضعت اللبنة الأولى لـ"مجمع شيخ الإسلام الحاج إبراهيم انياس التعليمي" في داكار سنة 1984. ويعتبر المجمع من أهم المؤسسات المحلية لتعليم العلوم الإسلامية والعربية بمنطقة غربي أفريقيا.

The effort of Sayydah Mariam was not limited to spreading the Islamic culture and Arabic (language) in the country on establishing "Darul Qur'anul Kareem" alone, but she laid the first building block for "Sheikh Ibrahim Niass Educational Complex" in Dakar in 1984. And the complex is considered among the most significant local institutions for Islamic and Arabic teachings within the west African sub-region.

قامت مريم بالعديد من الرحلات العلمية في عدة بلدان أفريقية في إطار أنشطة منظمة العالم الإسلامي التي كان والدها أحد أعضائها المؤسسين، كما أشرفت على تسيير عدة رحلات إلى الحج لمواطنين من دول غربي أفريقيا، وذلك بالتعاون مع بعض فاعلي الخير في دول الخليج العربي.

Sayydah Mariam (just like her father) embarked upon numerous educational trips in many African countries, within the framework of the activities of the Islamic World Organization, which her father happened to be one of its founding members. She as well facilitated so many trips of hajj or pilgrimage (to Makkah) for west Africa citizens. And that was with the help of some philanthropists in the Arabia gulf nations. 

تجاوز تأثير مريم انياس -بفضل شبكة علاقاتها الخارجية- المجال التعليمي كما تخطى الإطار المحلي، فقد  ساهمت

في حل بعض الأزمات الدبلوماسية التي واجهت السنغال في العقود الأخيرة.

Sayyadah Mariam Niass have had an overriding impact, by virtue of her overseas network or leverage. The educational field also exceeded the local framework. In fact she contributed in resolving some of the diplomatic crises facing Senegal in recent decades.

ومن هذه الجهود قيامها بوساطة بين السنغال وإيران أفضت إلى استئناف علاقاتهما الدبلوماسية سنة 1990 بعد قطعها 1986. كما أدت دورا في استئناف العلاقات الدبلوماسية بين السنغال والسودان سنة 1999 إثر تجميدها بسبب خلافات بين الطرفين.

And part of this effort was her mediation or reconciliation between Senegal and Iran, which led to the resumption of their diplomatic relations in 1990 after they were curtailed in 1986. She as well played a major role in the mediation of the diplomatic relations between Senegal and Sudan in 1999. After it was frozen due to the differences between the two.

اختيرت مريم انياس في يونيو/حزيران 2007 ضمن 300 شخصية عالمية للمشاركة في حوار مسيحي/يهودي/إسلامي نظمته جامعة كامبردج البريطانية تحت عنوان: "الإسلام والمسلمون في عالم اليوم"

Honors & Awards

Sayyadah Mariam was chosen or handpicked to be among 300 global icons or prominent personalities to get involve in Christian/Jewish/Muslim dialogue in July of 2007, which was organized by the University of Cambridge in Great Britain under the theme: "ISLAM & MUSLIMS IN TODAY's WORLD".

Happy birthday to Sayyadah Sheikha Mariyam Daughter of Maulana Sheikh Ibrahim Niass 

(Servant of the Qur'an)

# يحكى أن تاريخ ولادة الشيخة مريم انياس ، كانت الشيخ الإسلام الحاج إبراهيم انياس يقوم بتفسير القرآن الكريم .

كان قد أنهى التفسير سورة 18 الكهف قبل أن يبدأ سورة 19 مريم (مريم والدة عيسى عليه السلام) ، وأعلن له ولادة طفله.

# The story of the birth of Sayyadah Sheikhat Mariam Niass was narrated as, when Sheikhul Islam Ibrahim Niass was delivering tafsir or Quranic exegesis. So it happened that he just completed the tafsir of suratul Kahfi (the Cave 18) before he started the tafsir of suratu Mariam (Merry 19, Mariam mother of Issah Alail Salam), and the news about the birth of his baby was revealed to him.

سأل الشيخ إبراهيم انياس  عن جنس الطفل ، فقالوا له إنها فتاة.

قال إنني كنت أتوقع أن يكون لي ولد ، لكنها ستعيش ويكون لها مكانها بين الرجال ، وتتنافس معهم على المعرفة والاحترام والتقوى. وهكذا حمل الطفل الاسم الأول لمريم. نفس الاسم الأول لوالدة عيسى عليه السلام.

Sheikh Ibrahim Niass asked about the gender of the baby and they said she is a girl.

He said: However, I was hoping to have a boy, but she will grow up and have an outstanding position among men. And she will compete among them in knowledge, honor and piety. So this is how the baby had the name Mariam, same name of the mother of Issah Alail Salam.

روت الشيخة مريم بنت الشيخ إبراهيم انياس - حفظها الله ورعاها - علاقاته مع والدها في هذه الشروط في مقابلة.

Sheikhat Mariam the daughter of Sheikh Ibrahim Niass narrated her relationship with her father in an interview:

لقد قضيت الكثير من الأوقات الجيدة إلى جانب الشيخ إبراهيم انياس ولا أملك سوى ذكريات غير عادية معه.

كأب ، أحبني كثيرًا وكان دائمًا يحظى باحترام خاص بالنسبة لي.

I have spent more time being closer to Sheikh Ibrahim Niass and I could not remember but only some uncommon instances with him. Like a father, he loved me so much and extended special respect to me.

في الواقع ، عندما كان عمري 5 سنوات فقط ، قال الشيخ إبراهيم انياس إنه يريد أن يتولى شخصيًا مسؤولية تعليم القرآن.

In fact, when I became only five years of age, 

Sheikh Ibrahim Niass said he wants to have a person to take the responsibility of my Quranic studies.

في وقت الحج الأول إلى مكة ، قرر والدي أن يسلمني إلى شخص آخر ، حيث كان الوصول إلى مكة في تلك الأوقات محنة صعبة ، حتى أن الحجاج ماتوا أثناء الرحلة.

ثم أوكلني الشيخ إبراهيم انياس  إلى موريتاني يدعى أحمد ولد رباني ليعلمني القرآن.

So during his first hajj or pilgrimage to Makkah, Sheikh decided to leave me in the hands of another person, as the route and terrain to Makkah during those days was so difficult a task, to an extent that pilgrims would die in the course of the trip.

So Sheikh assigned a Muritanian teacher called Ahmad Wulud Rabbani to teach me the Qur'an.

واصلت معه حتى عاد والدي من مكة.

بعد ذلك ، جئت لأتقن القرآن بالكامل ، بينما علمني الشيخ إبراهيم انياس جنبًا إلى جنب مع بعض أسرار الكتاب المقدس.

ثم جاء دور أحمد ثيام ليضمن الجزء الباطني.

So I continued with him until my father returned from Makkah.

After that, I returned back to him to be able to master the Qur'an completely. And Sheikh taught me the Qur'an along with some divine secret of the sacred Book. 

Then came the role of Ahmad Cham to imbibe in me the esoterical (batiniyah) aspect of it.

عندما جئت لإتقان القرآن بالكامل ، كان والدي سعيدًا جدًا لأنه أعطاني صندوقين من الذهب.

So when I finally came to revise the entire Qur'an (by memory in front of him), my father was excited and he even donated to me two boxes of golden (jewelry).

دللني والدي كثيرًا لدرجة أنه كثيرًا ما اصطحبني معه في رحلاته.

My father pampered me so much that, more often (than not), he would take me with him on his trips (outside the country). 

إلى جانب تعلمي للقرآن ، كان والدي دائمًا يراقب روحانيتي ، وفي سن الخامسة عشر أخذت ورد الطريقة التجانية وهي إحدى نقاط الانطلاق لتعليم الشيخ أحمد تيجان و الشيخ إبراهيم انياس .

In terms of my Quranic studies, my father was monitoring my spirit (to see how motivated I was). So at 15 years of age, I accepted the (wird) litany of the sufi path of tijjaniyah, which is one of the starting points for the teachings of Sheikh Ahmadal Tijjani and Sheikh Ibrahim Niass.

وقبل أن أتزوج ، تأكد والدي من أنني قمت بتربية ، أي البحث عن الله وأسراره التي لا تعد ولا تحصى ".

And before I got married, my father made sure that I passed through the stages of "tarbiyah", spiritual tutelage, which is a quest for the divine knowledge of Allah and his mysteries which are countless.

في سن السادسة عشرة ، افتتحت أول ظهرة لها وبدأت بتعليم القرآن.

And at 16 years of age, she opened her own center and started teaching the Qur'an.

وقال شقيقها فضيلة الشيخ محمد الأمين الشيخ إبراهيم انياس( بابا ) :

" لقد فقدت والدتي في وقت مبكر جدًا وأسراني الشيخ إبراهيم انياس  لأختي ، وهي أمي ، لقد علمتني القرآن . كل ما تفعله الأم لطفلها ، فعلته لي ، عندما كان من المفترض أن أتزوج ، اختارت زوجتي ".

And her younger brother his eminence Sheikh Muhammadul Amin Ibrahim Niass (Baba) said:

"I had lost my mother at a very tender age and Sheikh left me under the care of my sister, and she (became) my mother (by action). She taught me the Qur'an. And whatever a mother would do to her child she did to me. Even when it became necessary for me to get married, she chose my wive for me."

سُمِّيتْ بخادمة القرآن ، جملتان تحددان شخصية الشيخة مريم بنت الشيخ إبراهيم انياس :

She was named khadimatul Qur'an or servant of the Qur'an, two sentences that indicate the personality of Sheikhat Mariam, daughter of Sheikh Ibrahim Niass:

قالت أنها تحب القرآن وتعاليمه كثيرا ، وتستمد كل سعادتها من تعليم القرآن للأطفال.

She said she loves the Qur'an a lot. Besides, she drives all her happiness by teaching children the Qur'an.

عمرا مديدا بالصحة الدائمة بفضل الله  !!!

A LETTER OF SHEIKH IBRAHIM NIASS TO AN ARABIC MAGAZINE ON THE OCCASION OFTHE  WORLD ARABIC LANGUAGE DAY IN 1969.....!!!

بمناسبة الْيَوْم العالمي للغة العربية، يقول: الشيخ إبراهيم نياس في إحدى رسائله

On the Occasion of the World Arabic Language Day, Sheikh Ibrahim Niass wrote in one of his epistles: 

.....وأنا أرى بكل صراحة أن اللغة العربية على عظمتها ورغم خصائصها التي لا تنكر، ما كانت لتخرج من جزيرتها لولا هذا الحدث الضخم الذي تمّ بفضل الله منذ أربعة عشر قرنا.. وهو نزول القرآن الكريم بلسان عربي مبين، ذلك الكتاب العزيز الذي سارتْ العربية في موْكبه حيثُما اتّجه فأصبحتْ بسببه لغة عالمية يُعنى بها ويقدسها جميع المسلمين في المشارق والمغارب.

.....And frankly speaking, I think the greatness and exclusivity of the Arabic language which is undeniable, it would not have emerged out of its root (Saudi Arabia), had it not been the significance event which had occurred with the divine virtue of Allah since fourteen centuries ago...which is the revelation of the holy Qur'an with the clear and concise Arabic tongue...That noble book which Arabic became its conveyor wherever it would head towards. Hence it became a global language which is being revered by Muslims from the western and eastern (parts of the world). 

وأذكر أني قد قمت سنة 1963 برحلة من سنغال بغرب إفريقيا إلى الصين بأقصى الشرق، فما حللت ببلد إلا وجدت فيه من يكلمني بعربية فصيحةٍ بليغةٍ ويُحييني بتحية الإسلام.

And I remember in 1963 I embarked on a trip from Senegal in west Africa to China in the far east, I would never make a stopover in a country without finding a person speaking eloquent and fluent Arabic to me and great me with the Islamic greetings.

لاجرم أنه لولا هذا القرآن الكريم لبقيت العربية لغة إقليميةً محصورةً، وإذا كُتب لأدبها أن ينمو ويتطور فسوف يكون على مستوى أدب جارتها الفارسية... فاللغة الفارسية لغة أدب وفنًّ وفلسفة منذ قديم، ولكنها ظلّت لغة إقليمية قلّ من يعرفها من غير أبنائها.

Inarguably, had it not been this Qur'an, the Arabic language would have remained a regionally limited and confined language. So when it is written for it's literary sense for it to grow and develop, it would still remain on the literary level of its neighbor the Persian language (Farisi)...For the Persian language is a language of literature, art and philosophy for a long time. It however remains a regional language, where only few know it apart from it's own people.

وأما لغة الضاد فقد انطلقت من أسْر الاقليمية كما قلت، منذ أن جعلها الله جلّتْ قدرته لغة التنزيل ولسان الوحي وأساس الإسلام وترجمان عباداته ورباط الروح. فهي- والحال هذه - لغة تستمدُّ شرفها وتستقي روافدها أساسا من الإسلام ولا تضمن لنفسها بقاء ولا خلودا إلا بهذا الإسلام. وهذه حقيقة لا تحتاج إلى برهان اللهم إلا إذا احتاج النهار إلى دليل.

However, as for the "duad" (Arabic) language, it has moved from being a regional language as I said, since Allah Almighty made it the language of the revelation, the tongue of revelation, the origin of Islam and the interpreter of his servants and the bond of the spirit. It is a language which draws its honor and tributaries away from Islam. And it has no guarantee of its own existence forever except with this (religion of) Islam. And this is a reality that doesn't need any evidence, unless the sun needs any proof (to establish its reality of appearance).

PART OF SOME AMAZING INCIDENTS DURING THE LAST DAYS OF SHEIKH IBRAHIM NIASS 

During the last days of Maulana Sheikh Ibrahim Niass (may Allah be pleased with him) on earth, he travelled to London for medical treatment. And by then his grandson and beloved Imam Hassan Cisse may Allah be pleased with him was around, since he was studying there. And as you know Sheikh Hassan understands English very well. However, after some medical screening or exams, the Doctor spoke to Sayyadi Hassan when he completed his duties. So Sheikh asked him[Sayyadi Hassan] what did the doctor tell you? Then Imamu Hassan replied him, [He said]: "The body is sick but the heart is safe and sound”, Then our Sheikh said: Praise be to Allah. [He quoted the Qur’an] : “The Day that neither wealth nor children would benefit[one] but only the one who meets Allah with a sound heart.” As if he knew he was about to die. Allahu Akbar…
