~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
THE SPIRITUAL AND CULTURAL DIMENSIONS OF BILATERAL RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN MORROCO AND NIGERIA, IN THE LIGHT OF THE SAYING, "O MANKIND WE HAVE CREATED YOU AS MALES AND FEMALES AND MADE YOU INTO NATIONS AND TRIBES IN ORDER TO KNOW EACH OTHER, VERILY THE MOST HONORED OF YOU IS THE MOST PIOUS AMONG YOU IN THE SIGHT OF ALLAH, VERILY ALLAH IS MOST KNOWING AND MOST PROFICIENT"
CIVILIZATIONAL PERSPECTIVE [1]:
-------------------------------------------------
If one word was to be used solely to describe the Morrocan-African relationship, it is "Al-Ta'aaruf"/"Aquintence", which was stated in the above verse which we get inundated by its abundance. And what is notable is that the Quranic context does stop in limiting the unidirectional or one-way "knowledge". So the Almighty did not say, "Li ta'arafoo/to know in regards to common knowledge", but He said, "Li ta'aarafoo/to get well aquinted or to get to know one another".
And "Ta'aaruf"/Acquaintance is characterized by recognition with peculiarities and not dissolving cultural identities for the common and conventional people.
And if the theorists have clearly disagreed in the definition of the concept of civilization, then the subject which is formulated from all definitions of civilization is "Ta'aaruf/Acquaintance".
So the subject in regards to acquaintance will lead us if we want to know the terminology to use in order to talk about civilization which some of them defined it as:
"Every output or produce which reflects in it the intellectual, emotional and behavioral factor for human social consciousness, in the framework of higher values and ideal principles which please the entire humanity".
Some Muslim scholars have concluded after explaining the significance of civilization through the lens of the holy Qur'an to the extent that (they opined that) the Islamic definition for it is:
"Presence(attendence) and testimony with all its meanings, that will produce a human paradigm which interprets the value of monotheism (theism or belief in Allah) and divinity, and proceed from them like an unseen distance or dimension which relates to the Oneness of the creator of the universe, and the designer or calibrator of its laws and canons, sunnah or traditions, and the microcontroller in running it. And from then, the role of man and his message are in the fulfilment or implementation of the succession on behalf of the creator of this universe in the reconstruction of his land and it's improvement, facilitating the livelihood of mankind in it, achieving full empowerment on it, making use of its features (advantages), caring and protecting what have been endowed (to mankind by Allah) in the universe, as well as building peaceful relationships with them, as they are also creatures that praise and invoke the name of Allah, or they are wealth or sustenance which must be conserved and maintained. Same applies to the establishment of relationships with human beings in every place on the surface of the earth, it's basis is brotherhood and familiarities, philanthropy as well as advocating for the well-being of the world and the hereafter."
And this Quranic definition of civilization is what encased the bilateral relationships between Morroco and Nigeria which was deeply in progress up till the fifth century B.C, during the time they adopted a form of barter trade where traders on both sides would act as dumb and deaf (traders would deliver their merchandise for the buyers to come and make their choices, and drop their own merchandise aside. They would then move and keep a distance, so the owners of the merchandise would come back to look at the merchandise they dropped for them as a means of payment, and if what was dropped is good for it, they would pick them as payment for their goods. And if not, they would leave them untouched). As Herodotus (The famous Greek historian and philosopher) put it. And this form of barter trade was part of the ancient or medieval practices known to humanity based on financial transactions, which was built on confidence and trust.
And few (period) after the middle of the 12th century B.C., there was an Andalusia-Morrocan geographer, Aba Ubaid Al-Bakry who undertook a precise discription of the Trans-Saharan routes and commercial tracts which became so famous for its several caravans and convoys, moving from Markhesh, Tilmisan, Tunisia and Tripoli heading towards the South. Then it would pass through the great (Sahara) desert in order to reach out to the main commercial hubs (centers) in West Africa.
And a British historian (Faag) mentioned to us how some Morrocans were undertaking the role of an agency, so they are currently living in the commercial centers in Nigeria. And they would be recieving the merchandise or goods that are delivered to them, which they would distribute to the people, as they also gather together merchandise to export them through the coast.
To be continued from the next section in this part which is divided in two ...from the paragraph that begins:
(وقد انطلق الإسلام على يد هؤلاء المغاربة....)
Islam started to spread through the effort of these Morrocans...).
[PART ONE]
WRITTEN BY:
DR. USTAZ SHEIKH IBRAHIM AHMED MAQARI
IMAM AT THE NATIONAL MOSQUE IN ABUJA, FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA & A LECTURER AT THE BAYERO UNIVERISTY IN KANO.
In the Name of Allah the Beneficent the Merciful
All praise is due to Allah who is worthy of praise with every tongue. Who is known with goodness, kindness and gratitude. He created mankind and taught him speech. And may Allah shower his praise and peace upon our leader Muhammad (PBUH), who was selected from the offspring of Adnaan. And upon his pure household and noble companions whose virtue renews the night and day.
My disposer of affairs, your Majesty the king of believers.
The lesson for today upon your permission, dwells on: "THE SPIRITUAL AND CULTURAL DIMENSIONS OF BILATERAL RELATIONS BETWEEN MORROCO AND NIGERIAN", in the light of the saying of Allah Almighty: "O MANKIND WE HAVE CREATED YOU AS MALES AND FEMALES AND MADE YOU INTO NATIONS AND TRIBES IN ORDER TO GET TO KNOW EACH OTHER. VERILY, THE MOST HONORED OF YOU IN THE SIGHT OF ALLAH IS THE MOST PIOUS AMONG YOU, VERILY, ALLAH IS MOST KNOWING AND MOST PROFICIENT".
So there exists a union between Morroco and Nigeria with deep and extended roots of religious impulse coupled with human ties, which requires a team of researchers and specialists in the field of different kinds of knowledge to treat it fairly.
However, descending on the principle of Jurisprudence that says, an easy way or thing would have to be used and reject the difficult one, we would say with the help and strength of Allah Almighty:
The context of the verse and the reality of the relationships necessitate dealing with the subject through four angles or perspectives:
First Perspective: Humanitarian, which is driven from the Divine Call to people in the first verse -
Second Perspective: Societal, which manifests in the saying of Allah to "To get to know each other" -
Third Perspective: Spiritual, which is useful in the saying of Allah "The most honored of you in the sight of Allah is most pious of you" -
Fourth Perspective: Intellectual and Cultural, which is driven from the saying of Allah, "Allah is most knowing and most proficient" -
HUMANITARIAN PERSPECTIVE:
-------------------------------------------------
Humanitarianism is one of the greatest characteristics of Islam which occupies a huge space in its theoritical bases and practical applications. It was linked with it's doctrines, it's banners (brands), it's methodology and it's manners with a very tight link. So the wisdom is in what we find in the first verse revealed from the Qur’an in (Suratul 'Alaq) Chapter of the Clot, emphasising the word "human" twice.
And the entire verses about caring for the welfare of human. And even if the entire Qur'an (deals with that), as some scholars would say, it is possible to describe it as a "Book of Mankind", as there is nothing in it except statement about mankind to mankind.
So the Qur'an is then very humanitarian. And this does not rule out the fact that it is very Divine or Godly, as far as the creator is not the opposite or reverse of the creature.
And perhaps this is part of what creates awareness about the extra reverence or honor upon people which was (mentioned) thrice in one sentence, where the Almighty says: "Say (O Muhammad [PBUH]) I seek refuge from the Lord of mankind, the King of mankind, and the God of mankind from the evil of the whisperer..."
And the purpose of humanity is the characteristics which characterize the individual or group of individuals or nations, within the framework of social awareness of the good that seeks to achieve perfection and to manifest in the relationships of individuals or nations with the other nations and individuals respectively.
And it is possible to summarize these characteristics or canons in the light of the saying of Almighty "And cooperate (collaborate) with one another in the course of kindness and piety".
And base on this, the saying of Almighty in the first verse that is guided by it (O people) then his saying (from male and female) is the biggest confirmation regarding the human womb that links the entire people.
And part of the benefits of this appeal is the principle of equality between human (and another). So the Nigerians have discovered a new religion which the Morrocans came with it as their native religion, which was not based on racial discrimination and ethnic differenciation from the onset.
And this high human principle shades up the entire relationships between Morroco and Nigeria to the extent that, Markhesh civilization gave way for the Nigerian writer, Abi Ishaq Alkanimy to read (research) in one of its highest institutions which is full of knowledge and scholars, at the time when his African brothers were being carried in chains and shackles for trafficking them in the western (slave) markets.
And these ethical values are the only explanation for bringing the kings of Kamin Barno to the scholars of Morroco, as it appears in a letter addressed to one of the authorities of Borno in the year (843 of hijrah calendar) to some (murabideen) scholars who are waiting patiently as subtitute army during a war, were admonishing them after (violating) a covenant, saying: "Why did you leave behind the tradition of your elders? Why did you cut short your stay as guests and sending missionaries to our country since you made a covenant with our elderly statesman? So you need to continue to come as you used to, because the country is your country as it was the country of your ancestors."
And part of human features associated with this relationship is also peaceful coexistence, despite differences in religion. And for the sake of the popularity of (murabideen) those who are patiently waiting as war subtitute with honesty (trustworthiness).
The kings in West Africa used to be idolatrous and gentiles, they were using them for steering their government affairs and they emulated them to a loftier positions in their kingdoms. As it has been historically proven in the kingdoms of Ghana and Oyo (State), and this latter one (Oyo State) is currently located in South-western part of Nigeria. And this is what the opportunity had presented for the spread of Islam with what those counselors and advisers rejoice (enjoy) of virtuous and noble morality.
