FATWAH OF MAULANA SHEIKH IBRAHIM NIASS REGARDING THE USE OF RADIO
BROADCAST FOR QURANIC RECITATION & DA'WAH UPON A QUESTION BY THE PROMINENT
SCHOLARS OF KANO IN THE 60's {3}
Salam Alaikum Juma'a Mubarak. We hereby continue with the third excerpt
of whole new book in our Baye Book Translation Project that we started last
week. It is entitled:
"الحجة البالغة في كون إذاعة القراءن سائغة"
"THE PROFOUND PROOF that indicates that QURANIC RECITATION on the
RADIO is PERMISSIBLE [Islamically]"
Written by:Maulana Sheikh Ibrahim Niass
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------When
we observe in the midst of Muslims today, it has failed to hold firm the banner
of Islam, and the source of reference for them in terms of sharia ruling is the
Qur’an and Sunnah, [in countries] such as Makkah & Madinah, Egypt, Syria,
Yamen, Iraq, Jerusalem, Turkey, Pakistan, Libya, Algeria and Morocco etc. among
the mass of the Muslims in Europe and all of them have agreed upon utilizing
these machines, even in prayer. And hundreds of thousands of eminent Muslim
scholars. They do carry our views and it is not easy to fault them.
So whoever relate them to
misguidance he has related the umah or society of [Prophet] Muhammad that does
not dominate on misguidance issue to misguidance.
And the unanimity of the umah [on an issue] is infallible to
misguidance, based on the promised of the truthful Prophet [PBUH]. Don’t you
see the pilgrims in the holy mosque pray around Ka’abah behind an Imam with
this tool and inside the mihrab or niche of the Prophet [PBUH], and behind them
were hundreds of thousands of scholars who were surrounded by the sharia and
they are Muslims weather they say it or did not say it. So would we have good
assumption with the servants of Allah and devise the best ways out and we
accuse the Imam with debauchery,
persistence and unlawful acts?
Then this writer on forbidden and non-believing act should take a second
look. So the one who forbids what is lawful is like the one who makes
lawful what is forbidden. And whoever
called his brother “You are a non-believer”, then it would fit either of the
two.
Hence returning to Jama’ah and to say I do not know in regards to what
he does not know is the safest.
[just a paraphrased form of the poem] It is not the one who makes mistakes
and admits and corrects himself [after realizing he is wrong]. Rather, the
mistake maker is the one who makes mistake but would not change after realizing
that he had made mistake.
So a believer adopts the best ways out and accepts excuses and the hypocrite
follows privacy. And the notion of some of them that we go with the source. The
origin in everything is not to forbid it, until there appears proof that would
necessitate forbidding it. Else, it is usurpation in front of Allah and his
messenger in making things unlawful. This is not even an imitative function,
for the imitative function, but imitation and asking the people of knowledge
(So ask those who know if you do not know – and on top of every knower is the
best knowing). And the whenever a wise ignores something that he makes as part
of his unknowns:
And tell the one who claims he knows
You know something and many things has vanished away from you
And the one who protects the proof is proof to the one who does not
protect it and the one who supports the excluded. And the one who made remarks
on the issue with the sayings of Allah Almighty:
(And He creates what you do not know) in absolute clarity with the one
who Allah enlighten his vision. Muhammad Bun Iddriss Ashafi’ee may Allah be
pleased with him was asked: (We have not left behind nothing from the Book
[Al-Qur’an]). And where He mentioned this seal vessel and cars that are being
created in recent time, He [Allah] says: Allah Almighty (And He creates what
you do not know) and at the same time:
(There is nothing that its treasurers are not with Us and we only reveal
it according to a specified time):

"الحجة البالغة في كون إذاعة القراءن سائغة"
"THE PROFOUND PROOF that indicates that QURANIC RECITATION on the
RADIO is PERMISSIBLE [Islamically]"
Written by:Maulana Sheikh Ibrahim Niass
This book idea came about in the sixties upon upon one of the da'wah
trips of Maulana Shehu Barhama to Nigeria. It was upon a question he was asked
by the prominent scholars of Kano, led by the Emir of Kano himself, his royal
highness Alhaji Muhammad Sanusi in regard to using the radio to recite the
Qur'an and do da'awah which the izalah/wahabi groups in Nigeria and elsewhere
were referring to as bid'ah.
So upon that question Sheikh used his exceptional and extra-ordinary
intellectual capacity by using Quranic verses and Prophetic wisdom to answer
the question. And you could see that he mentioned all the names of these
scholars in the introduction below.
Can u imagine how an answer to just one question was dealt at length to
cover 72 pages?....That was Sheikh Ibrahim for you!!!....Please read and share:
All Praise be to Allah and He is enough, and peace be upon his servants
that he has chosen. His majesty Amirul Muhmineen, and the helper of the Sunnah
of the best of messengers, the royal king of Kano, Alhaji Muhammad Al-Sanusi,
may Allah protect you and support you and may He show you the truth as truth
and help you to abide by it and show you the falsehood as falsehood and bless
you to distance yourself from it. Peace and blessings of Allah upon the
Prophet.
I have reviewed many messages that were sent to you by some people who
are claiming to be knowledgeable, may Allah increase their kinds – And I was
happy to get those who would address this
and all of them were talking in regards to your question about the ruling
of the Qur’anic recitation on radio; So some of them declared it as haram, even
declared it as kufur or disbelieve and would even try to manipulate and
misapply verses of the Qur’an out of it context. And to quote what Abu Muhammad
the author of Risalah said to Abdul Salam:
I wish your mother did not give birth to you
And how bad she would feel if she gave birth to you and you did not seek
knowledge. And bad you would have felt ìf you did not seek knowledge and you
did not learn.
He mentioned that machine is just for play being used by the fools. And
he has the right to say I don’t know what this machine is, and I do not
determine the nature of the question [before I answered]:
And it is part of the amazing things that you do not know
And you don’t know that you don’t know
Imam Ali may Allah be pleased with him was asked about the reasons for
excessive dispute? And he said: If the one who has no knowledge would have kept
quite there wouldn’t have been dispute. So radio is a creative tool to amplify
voice and extend to a far frontier or limit, which the tongue is incapable of
reaching without it, coupled with the disparity of ranks.
The speaker uses it to convey message to be heard. And the speech with
it could be either Qur’anic recitation, preaching, or spreading knowledge or
zikir, remembrance of Allah or if it may be an amusement .
And glorification of the Qur’an and safeguarding its recitation and
reflecting over its recitation, negligence, amusement and composing instances that returns to the
reciters either via the radio or without it.
So if a heartfelt, weeping, sorrowful
and reflective man comes and recite his transmission in front of
it[radio], as such or would magnify it as such. Just like when an amusement
person would broadcast his transmission as it is. So radio is not an amusement
tool and its place is not a place of amusement, unless it is found with the
people of amusement. And when it is found with the people of worship, just like
mosques, then it would be a place of worship, not a place of amusement, because
there are verses or hadith that were revealed complimenting people who make
zikir at the place of heedless ỏr
negligence. And there are some zikir that were commanded to be recited in
market places due to the increasing number of heedless people according to an
authentic hadith.
So the one who implements
the sharia Prophet [PBUH] advocated for zikir to be made at [those markets]
which is like collecting of pebbles at the place of Bani Kananat [where you
have to move briskly]. And the movement at safah and marwah. And he [the
Prophet (PBUH)] said people used to move around them worshiping idols, and so
on as part and parcel of the purpose of the sharia and Sunnah.
How many are those who claim
of knowledge burgle (steal) out of
ignorance
He sees to precede the hands
of criticism
He criticizes people of
knowledge while he is immersed [with ignorance]
He does not know a facade from a far
Just like hedgehog strays her tentacles
against any animal bigger than her
With lenient touch individually…..

“When you argue in something return it to Allah and his messenger”
(The Holy Qur’an)
In the Name of Allah the Beneficent the Merciful
The scholar, Imam, Intellectual a dedicated reviver, Abu Ishaq Maulana
Sheikh Ibrahim Abdallahi Niass AlKoalakhi
has said:
(All praise be to Allah who has taught by the pen. He has thought man
what he knew not---The Merciful (Allah) has taught the Qur’an. He has created
man and taught him knowledge [speech]---And say O Allah increase me in
knowledge --- We have not left anything unmentioned in the Book [Qur’an]--- We
have sent upon you(Muhammad) the Book [Al-Qur’an] clarifying everything --- And
He creates what you do not know --- Say [to them O Muhammad] look at what is in
the heavens and the earth --- And there is nothing that we do not have its
treasuries with Us [Allah] and We do not release it [down on earth] but
according to certain time ---Wouldn’t they look at the camel how she was
created. And to the heaven sky how it was raised and to the mountains how it
was erected and to the earth how it was spread --- So man should take a look at
his food) and the rest of the verses that if we had compiled them and talked
about their glorious and hidden meanings it would have restricted this domain
or range of his (Allah's) message.
And prayer and peace be upon his servant Muhammad the messenger of Allah
the master of Arabs and non-Arabs, and upon his household, his companions and
his followers of the later generation as part of the most virtuous societies.
However: I was asked by a group of scholars of Kano in northern
Nigeria under the leadership of their honored royal king and great authority
the champion of the religion, Alhaji Muhammad Al-Sanusi, may Allah protect and
shield him and grant him his wishes here and in the hereafter. And the
prudent and thoughtful author Sayyadi
Alhaji Ahmed Dantata bun Alhassan. And a great scholar Ustaz Alhaji
Abubakar Atiqu bun; Khadir, a great intellectual, cerebral Alhaji Abdallahi
Salaga. And valiant scholar Alhaji Ahmed Tijjani Ibn Usman [Zangon Baribari].
And Sayyid Alhaji Muhammad Sani Ibn Al-Hassan,
Sheikh Alhaji Usman Al-qalansuwi
[Maihula. And Sayyid Alhaji Mahmud
and the Wazir Alhaji Muhammad Al-Munir and others among the learned
scholars and the sources of pride of the religion of Islam. May Allah grant us
and them success towards what he loves and pleases with. And may He cure
the ailing hearts and guide us towards the truth and bless us
to stand by it and guide us to know the falsehood and bless us to stay away
from it.
I said: They have all asked me about Quranic recitation and spreading
the religious knowledge and preaching and remembrance of Allah and its likes
among the acts that gets one close to Allah on the radio or via radio
broadcasting. And I answered them as I
was in transit [travelling] with what[Allah] says:
(In the name of Allah the Beneficent the Merciful, All praise be to
Allah Lord of the worlds. The Compassionate the Merciful. Master of the Day of
Judgement. You do we worship and to You we seek for help). Who says: (Whoever
make better the words which was preached in the course of Allah…[he is
blessed]) And prayer and peace be upon
our master Muhammad the messenger of Allah who says:(May Allah revive or renew
[the persona] of person who hears my words and grasp[ understand it] and
conveys[to others] it as he heard it”. And he said also: (Convey [the message]
on my behalf even if it is s verse). And says: (Allah supports this religion
[even] with an impious man). And upon his household, his companions and the
followers and their followers with kindness until the Last Day.
However: Scholars have categorized bid’ah or innovation in five
categories. Just like the categories in the ruling of the Sharia:
Wajib, [mandatory/compulsory], Mandoob [non mandatory], Jaez
[permissible], Maqruh [detestable] and Muharam [forbidden]. So which ever [act]
would facilitate the act of worship and
a path to acts of benevolence and conveying the message of Prophet Muhammad
[PBUH] and establishing the rulings of Islam they considered it as
wajib[compulsory], and what leads to acts of kindness is associated with
mandoob [non-obligatory] and whatever is would not inflict any evil upon the
religion is considered jaez [permissible] and what involves annihilation of the
Sunnah is regarded as makruh [detestable], while what involves misguidance and
corruption are considered haram or forbidden.
And these invented tools in this contemporary time if you do not regard
them as wajib or compulsory [to use] then we should at least regard them as
non-compulsory, because scholars have made [invented] books and set up schools
to spread knowledge. And [inventing] the books of hadith and other religious
books are part of compulsory and non-compulsory acts.
And these recording tools and voice amplifiers and radios were invented
in recent time to serve as a means and
an aid towards the advancement of the religion. Don’t you see the number
of pilgrims [to Makkah] are increasing every year ? --- And all praise be to
Allah --- How could they have been able to pray the congregational prayer under
one Imam with the loudspeaker which would be mounted in the holy mosque?
So any means to the obedience of the command of Allah is an obedience as
well. And we have seen how these ships [sea vessels], modern cars, airplanes,
and telecommunications gargets and others became useful tools for Muslims in
the practice of their religious obligations, and after all, actions are only by
intentions.
And a believer [always] drives the best means [to achieve his religious
obligations]. And scholars are obligated to make things easy and [always] give
glade tidings, based upon the hadith of the Prophet [PBUH]: (Make things easy
do not make things difficult, and give glade tidings and do not alienate
[people]). Even if it is what has taken over by the scourge, if only it is
meant for the sake of Allah(is permissible). And the ummah of Muhammad [PBUH]
would not all agree on something which is a misguidance.
May Allah grant us and you success
towards what he loves and is pleased with and may He cure the hearts of
the spiritually sick ones. Ameen, Wassalam!
This is how he summarized the first answer for them. Then he continued
with the second message after many ignorant people restarted the controversy
again…....
[To be continued……]
Publisher’s Statement [Sheikh Ahmed BabalWaiz, Interpreter &
Spokesperson of Faidah in Ghana]
And the one who took charge of publishing this beneficial publication
[as part of his khidmah for the Sheikh] was Abul Fauz, Alhaji Ahmed BabalWaiz
the interpreter of the custodian of Faidah [Shehu Ibrahim] in Gold Coast [the
first name of Ghana] in Kumasi. This is what he wrote in this book:
In the Name of Allah they
Beneficent the Merciful
Gratitude to the One [Allah] who has brought awliyah [friends of Allah]
closer to him. And granted them the presence of the [divine] witness of
extinction with him. And perpetual peace be upon the master of the divine
martyrs our master Muhammad and his household whom Allah blessed with his
divine [witness] their intended purpose.
However, i express thanks and profound gratitude for having the
opportunity to shoulder the [financial] responsibility of publishing this book,
which has nothing like it, nor any book gathered what it entails of pearls of
meanings(understanding)…So congratulations for getting this gaus [succor] among
us, the custodian of Faidah of Ibrahimiyah [divine flood] the author of this
book.
And we have become conveyors on his behalf and his spiritual children
manifesting it to every denier.
So I committed myself to the publication of this book as a token of
Khidmah [service] for my Sheikh and my Murabi and for obtaining izin or
permission from him for this service and others. So May Allah reward him with
goodness. Wassalam.

*HE [ALLAH] HAS MADE THEM SUCCESSORS & MANIFESTED [THEIR] SEALING &
CONCEALMENT*
Allah Almighty says: "Allah has promised among you who believed and do the
righteous deeds that He will make them successors on earth, as He made
successors those who came before them. He will strengthen their religion of
which He is satisfied with them and He will replace for them security after
their fear" - From Verse 55 of Suratul Nur -
It was revealed in the exegesis of Sheikh Ibrahim Niass of this volume from the
holy verse (page 222, volume 4):
Succession is representation..representation on behalf of a person if he is
absent or dead or unable, he needs representation. Or He made a successor as
just an honor and a respect in the presence of the successor. This is what
belongs to the awliyah or saints of Allah Almighty, they are successors of
Allah, while Allah is present, he neither disappears nor dies, but has made
them successors as an honor to them.
Religious Clerics[Scholars] Are in Three Parts:
1- Those who memorized the Qur’an and those who memorized the Ahadith of the Prophet(PBUH). They are
the protectors of the religion. It is from them facts are attributed and from
them references are made in regards to origin of knowledge..
2- Men [Scholars] who teach the fundamentals of the religion and are rebutting
the innovators and deviant groups with irrefutable proves and they with the
[religious] judges of Islam.
3- Fiqh [Jurisprudence] scholars who are explaining and analyzing to people
about deeds and dealings. They are the agents who influence the conducts[of
people].
4-Lords of divine knowledge and the fact they are bringing to the journey
towards Allah Almighty by leaving anything behind except him and engaging with
non but him. They are the successors of Allah on earth.
The thoroughbred people with divine knowledge have obtained the seal of the
saints from this verse, since the Prophets have their seal, who is Muhammad
(PBUH). Allah has promised this Ummah that He will send them a successor on
earth as He did send a successor to those who existed before them. They
understood with this that, saints have a seal. And the first person who
authored a book on that was the Al-Hakeem [The Wise man] Al-Tirmhidi, he stated
that the saints of Allah have a seal and stated the signs in that. Ibnu Arabi
Al-Hatimi also stated that. They even mentioned the name of his country and
status and name. And Ibnu Arabi said: I saw him in Fez, being challenged with
denial in what he establishes in his secret. He would not say anything which
was not true and people are rushing on to deny what he said...
And Ibnul Arabi authored a book that he entitled: "Unaqau Maqrib fee
Khatimil Awliyah Wa Shamsu Magrib". He mentioned that Awliyah have a seal
and lump to the status of concealment, with the mentioning of the sun, because
the sun can not be reached considering the facts in it. And he said in his
book: Allah has made in the Morocco, because Morocco is the place of secrets of
Allah and concealment. That is Allah has sent the entire prophets from the
beginning of the era to the last part of the era and non of the prophets has
ever reached this land[Morocco], but He has made this land like a place of
concealment. If He wants to conceal something He would bring it to this
land[Morocco].
Salamu Alaikum brothers and
sisters in Islam, as promised you last week, we here by start the translation
of the Tafsir of Maulana Sheikh Ibrahim Niass under the theme:
"التأملات القرآنية في روضة الرمضانية"
"QUR'ANIC CONTEMPLATION
IN THE GARDEN OF RAMADAN", And by virtue of Baye being the beloved of
Rasululah s.a.w, we randomly selected a part he was making a comparative
analysis of the virtues between the Prophet(s.a.w) and Prophet Ibrahim, who had
existed before him. This was culled in his book of Tafsir entitled:
Sheikh Ibrahim Niass was onces
analyzing the Qur'an when he reached where Allah says: {Allah regarded Ibrahim
a friend} 125 in Suratul Nisa (Women) Sheikh Said:
The Difference between Khalil(friend)
& Habib(beloved):
Khalil is given after he asked, and
Habib is given without asking. Khalilu Lah Prophet Ibrahim said:
{Allah is sufficient for us and the
best to rely upon}(Al-Imran, 173) And Allah says: {O you the Prophet(s.a.w)
Allah is sufficient for you and those who follow you among the believers}
Suratul Anfal 64.

In this part of the

Allah Almighty says:

everything."

Sheikh Ibrahim said
in his Exegesis on this verse: Page 188/ Volume 6):
"Allah Almighty
have reveled two chapters, He opened each of them with "Exalted", and
it means His goodness(kindness) has increased or is Mightier than the
description of those who are talking about him. Allah Almight is descriptive
with entire qualities befitting Him and He is far away from the
description of those talking about Him.
First:"Exalted
was the One who has revealed the Quran upon his servant (Muhammad). And this,
"Exalted is the One who wields kingdom in his hand". Hence the world
also establishes two kingdoms, manifest kingdom for the lords of the countries
and hidden kingdom for the those who hold the Qur'an because Allah is the one
who possesses real kingdom. He is manifest and hidden. So the manifest of his
kingdom is for the kings and its hidden kingdom belongs to knowledgeable people
who inherit Prophets and successors of Allah on earth.
Hence every manifest
kingdom survives on the strength of the hidden kingdom. So the
people(politicians) of the world get their power and privilege from
Allah. Then the popular gets the popularity by virtue of those outside the loop
or behind the scene(the clergy who pray for them to get there).

Allah Almighty says:
"Among those We created are a society or people who are guiding with
the truth and are using it as a means of justice and fairness". verse 181
from Suratul 'Araf (The Heights)-
SHEIKH IBRAHIM NIASS
analysed this holy verse in his Exegesis, page 344/volume2( below:
Allah Almighty has
informed us that among the people of Muhmmad (s.a.w) would be people who would
be guiding by the truth(Qur'an) and will use it as a means of justice and
fairness. It is a glad tidings to the Prophet(s.a.w) and the people of
Muhammad. The Prophet(s.a.w) interpreted it as, "A group from my umah
(people) would not cease being steadfast on the truth and they would not be
bordered by whoever betrayed them or treated thrm with contempt until the
command of Allah(Last Day) comes and they are in that(state). And he said:
"Issah the son of Maryam would find some of his disciples in my
people(when he comes back onto the earth before the Last Day". And those
would never fade out. They would not be isolated from them on either space or
time until Issah comes back -- To Allah belongs all Gratitude.
"Among those We
have created are people who are guiding by the truth (Qur'an) and are using it
for justice and fairness." There are group of Awliya among them, that is
the Prophet(s.a.w) said: "The Last Day will not come until there will not
be people mentioning "Allah Allah".. And it was narrated that) Allah
has some 300 people whose hearts would be like the heart of Adam. And Allah
have some 40 people whose hearts would be like the heart of Musah. And
Allah has some 7 people whose hearts would be like the hearts of Ibrahim the
friend of Allah. And Allah has some 5 people whose hearts would be like the
heart of Angel Gabriel. And Allah has some three people whose hearts are like
the heart of Meekail. And Allah has one person whose heart is like the
heart of Israfeel(And one in this hadith is the who the Sufi 's called Qutub
(Pole/Leader), Gauth (Helper/Succor) and Khalifah(Successor) and it is by virtue
of these people that you would be blessed with wealth and rainfall. And the
world would continue to be in good so far us those people exist. And the
Prophet(s.a.w) says: Issah would descend back on to the earth while those
people(friends of Allah) still exist. To Allah belongs all Gratitude.

Assalmu Alaikum brothers and sisters in Islam,
Ramadan Mubarak to everyone. Since today happens to be the first day of
Ramadan, we will commence the translation of Tafsir of Maulana Sheikh Ibrahim
Niass which we themed:
"التأملاتالقرآنيةفيروضةالرمضانية"
"QURANIC
CONTEMPLATION IN THE GARDEN OF RAMADAN"
From the beginning of
his book entitled:
"فيرياضالتفسير".
"IN THE GARDEN
OF EXEGESIS".
And we will be
pasting and posting the original Arabic pages we translate for the benefit of
those who can read and understand Arabic language. We begin with the first two
pages below with foot note commentary, replete with Ahadith. In fact reading
Baye Niass Tafsir would manifest to any "Doubting Thomas" about the
assertion that, he took the Sunnah [Ahadith] of the Prophet[PBUH] with all
seriousness it deserves, both theoretically and practically speaking.
It would interest readers
to know that, the entire Tasfir book of Baye Niass contains over six thousand
Ahadith. I this first section, he would take us through the statement of
Sayyidina Ali regarding Quranic interpretation as well as the fifteen areas of
expertise one needs to have to be a good muffasir [exegetist].
LESSON ONE
I seek refuge from
the accursed devil. I begin in the name of Allah the Beneficent the Merciful. O
Allah send your benediction to our master Muhammad the opener of what was
locked and the seal of what was past helper of the Truth[Allah] with the
Truth[Qur'an] and a guide to your[Allah] straight path and upon his household
befitting his status and great magnitude. And there is no way out and no
strength but for Allah the Highest and Greatest.
O by [virtue of] the
determination of Sheikh [Tijjani] be present
In this our gathering
or lectures [of tafsir]
And patronize
[frequently] with a sight [upon us]
That would bring us[a
tremendous ]success
{{I seek refuge with
Allah from the accursed devil}}, it is required from every initiator of a field
to know its principlesand limits and the limit of this field is a knowledge
with which the words of Allah is understood. And its name is the knowledge of
[tafsir] exegesis.
Exegesis and
Interpretation are not in the same meaning. [Tafsir]Exegesis means what
explains the words of Allah Almighty from the point of view of what is lifted
or conveyed [from a source].
[Taweel] Interpretation is what supports taking
words meanings from the mental point of view. It is a must to have naql[what is
picked or conveyed] in exegesis, because the Prophet[PBUH] says about the
Qur’an, “To explain to people what was revealed to them”.
So this depends in
exegesis what was done by the messenger of Allah[PBUH] . And if it is not
obtained directly from the messenger of Allah, then the exegesis would be
accepted with the reasonable and rational mind. Because Allah Almighty says:
“It is a Qur’an in Arabic[clear language] for you to reason.” This verse is
here for us to think [deep] until we begin to understand the meaning of the
words of Allah Almighty.
Sayyidina Ali may
Allah be pleased with him was asked: Do you have a book that the messenger of
Allah[PBUH] exclusively reserved for you the household[of the Prophet(PBUH)].
He said: No, but only the Book of Allah Almighty [the Qur’an], and then a
[deeper] understanding he granted to a Muslim man in it[the Qur’an].
And Sayiddina Ali may
Allah be pleased with him said again: “The Qur’an has the power to defeat
[everything], it has many faces of interpretation so embrace its [different
faces]”. So whoever holds on to something which has a face [of interpretation]
from the Qur’an, he would not be exposed in it. Both [Tafsir] Exegesis and
[Tahweel] Interpretation must depend on the side of transference and intellect.
It was narrated from
the Prophet[PBUH] that, he has prohibite the interpretation of the Qur’an
with[personal opinion]. It is a must in the course of[Tafsir] exegesis
knowledge of the Arabic language and the knowledge of the rules of the Sharia
and knowing about[bayaan] or analysis and [badee’a] eloquence in speech. And
above all there must be a [divine] light [gifted knowledge] in the heart of the
interpreter or exegetist [muffasir].
Foot Notes:
[Analysis of the
sources of various Ahadith used]:
1-It was narrated by
Imamu Gazali in his book: “Al-Hihyah”: “Revival. Vol 11375. At the remembrance
of the “Hidden acts in recitation”: Narrated from Ali may Allah be pleased with
him said: “The Prophet Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him have never
concealed anything from me that he has covered it from people, except what
Allah blessed a servant with in terms of understanding his Book [the Qur’an] .
And Hafizil Iraqi
said in his collation of this hadith: From the narration of Abi Jaheefah who
said: We asked Ali and said: Do you have[in your possession] anything from the
messenger of Allah[PBUH] apart from the Qur’an? And he said: No! by the One
[Allah] who split the seed and freed the wind [storm], unless what Allah has
endowed a servant of understanding of his Book [Al-Qur’an]…Hadith. It is from
Al-Bukhari with a pronunciation: Do you have from the messenger of Allah what
is not in the Qur’an….up to the end...Authentic Book of Al-Bukhari. In the Book
of “Blood Money”[expiation]/ Rational (6903).
2-Ibn Sa’ad narrated
from Iqramah on the authority of Ibnu Abbass that Ali bun Khattab sent him to
the Khawarij and said: Go to them and argue with them and do not give them
proofs from the Qur’an because it has different faces of interpretations, but
argue with them with the Sunnah [hadith]. And he narrated from a different face
on the authority of Ibn Abbass who said: O Amirul Muhmineen [Leader of the
Faithful], then I am more knowledgeable in the Book of Allah [Al-Qur’an] than
them,[because] it was revealed in our homes. He said: you spoke the truth, but
the Qur’an carries different faces of interpretations. You would say[your point
of view] and he would say[point of view]. But argue with them with the Sunnah [Ahadith],
because they would not get any way out to avoid it.
So he went to them
and argued with them with the Sunnah [Ahadith], and no single proof had
remained for them. Al-Itqaan in the knowledge of the Qur’an 2/122. And some of
the examples of these faces [of different interpretations] just by way of
example is the numerous meaning of “fitna”, “trial or test” to fifteen
different meaning, review it in details. Al-Itqah 2/127-126.
3-Tirmidhi narrated
in his authentic from the Book of the Qur’anic Exegesis: On the authority of
Ibn Abbass, the Prophet[PBUH] said: (Who ever said something about the Qur’an
without knowledge, he should prepared his place of dwelling in the hell fire)
{2874}.
It was narrated in
Jamie’l Kabir(Jam’ul Jawam’e) Vol, 1/814 AND IN Al-Jami’ul Sageer. Vol. 2
number 8899.
It was also narrated
by Ibn Jarir, Al-Bagawi, Al-Anbari, Al-Baihaqi in Al-Sha’ab from Jundub, the
messenger of Allah [PBUH] said: (Whoever said something in the Qur’an with his
own opinion he is wrong). Al-Jam’ul Kabir. Vol. 1/814. In Jami’ul Al-Sageer:
(He who said something with his own opinion and get it right, he is (still
wrong). Vol. 2/ number 8900.
4- Suyyuti mentioned
in Al-Itqan that it is incumbent on a [muffasir] exegetist to have a universal
knowledge which an exegetist needs and there are fifteen areas of expertise
[some of them are]:
Al-Lugah[Arabic]
Language, Al-Nahwu Grammar, Al-Tasreef[Saraf] Articulation, Al-Ishtiqaq[taking
a word and transforming it into another word while maintain the root origin of
the word…] Al-Fiqhu[Jurisprudence, Asbabul Nuzul[Reasons for revelations] etc.

Assalmu Alaikum brothers and sisters in Islam, Ramadan Mubarak to everyone.
Since today happens to be the second day of Ramadan, we proceed with the
translation of the Tafsir of Maulana Sheikh Ibrahim Niass which we themed:
"التأملاتالقرآنيةفيروضةالرمضانية"
"QURANIC
CONTEMPLATION IN THE GARDEN OF RAMADAN",
We continue from
where we left off yesterday in his book entitled:
"فيرياضالتفسير"
"IN THE SHADOW
OF EXEGESIS"
In the next three
pages below, Maulana Baye Niass would take readers through some historical
analogy on how Rome and Persia were defeated by the earlier Muslims (companions
of the Prophet(PBUH), by the use of the Qur'an not killing machines and how
Allah has fulfilled his promise of preserving the Qur'an etc.
LESSON ONE{2}
Allah has revealed
this Book [to us] as guidance and light. It is unlike the rest of the authored
books, not a dry worldly law, and it is not a medical book that sickness and
pharmaceutical [or medicine] are known. And it is not human history where
incidents and events are known, and it is not a journey in us that are embarked
upon, because all these fields of expertise that estimate the power of human
might is capable of authoring or creating [something] like it.
And this is the book that came as guidance and light after all these and
brought together the material and ethereal world constitution since its
revelation till the end of time. Every constitution would be exclusively
confined to a country or countries for sometime then it would be amended.
However, this is a continuous constitution for all generations in every
country.
Those who came before us held on to this book, they are the messengers of Allah
[PBUH] and his companions, then Allah endowed them with what He had promised
them, “Allah has promised those who believe and did good deeds, that surely, He
will grant them in the land, inheritance [of power]. As He granted it to those
before them; that He will establish in authority their religion-the one which
He has chosen for them; and that He will change [their state], after the fear
in which they [lived], to one of security and peace: And ‘They will worship
Me[alone] and not associate anything with Me.’ If anyone do reject Faith after
this, they are rebellious and wicked", “And it is a right upon us to help
the believers”, “And to Allah belong the glory and to his prophets to the
believers”. When the [Muslim] society held on to the Qur’an, Allah fulfilled
these promises to them then they saw that. They then wielded power over
countries and conquered and crushed its dwellers;
The strongest kingdoms in the world by then were the Romans and the Persians,
they were conquered by the companions of the messenger of Allah[PBUH], who had
no tools [of war], neither had they huge number [of soldiers], but except a
verse from the Qur’an; not all of them had memorized the Qur’an completely, but
it sufficed for each of them to have [a least] a verse of the Qur’an with him,
but he would work with it and hold fast upon it.
Saayidina Umar bunul Khattab had opened one-fourth[quarter] of the world and
had defeated the entire countries until he entered Europe and ruled over the
people entirely. He never knew mathematics, nor engineering except this Book
[Al-Qur’an].
However, when the [Muslim] society neglected this book, the Europeans over
ruled [defeated] them and the Gog and Magog of the Eastern[the Jewish] part of
the then world overpowered them, and they lost their might which they had
earned by virtue of holding on to the Qur’an. And the only way of getting back
to the might and [the past] glory is to hold fast on to this Book.
And it is not possible for the one who does not know the interpretation or
meaning of this Book [Al-Qur’an] to hold fast on to it. So this is a Book
revealed from the heavens, Allah Almighty has revealed it upon his messenger as
a glade tiding and a warning [at the same time]. He explains in it what He
commanded his servants with it and also explained in it all what He has
prohibited his servants of doing. And he has taught them what he has promised
them of happiness in the hereafter. So he who does not know this Book how can
he be able to hold fast on to it?
It is a must to understand this Book. It was because of this reason that the
messenger of Allah [PBUH] interpreted the Qur’an and his companions also interpreted
it. And the Muslim society also interpreted it, and they interpreted it
numerous times. A covenant or promise was revealed with the Qur’an during the
earlier stages of its revelation, and Allah has fulfilled for us that promise a
real fulfilment which gives us hope in all what this Book has promised us.
In the beginning of the Qur’anic revelation, Allah revealed: “Do not move fast
your tongue with the Qur’an to hasten [your memorization]. Verily it is upon us
its compilation and its reading [in your heart] ”So when we read follow its
reading, and to us belongs its explanation [clarification]”. This is the
earlier stage of the Qur’anic revelation. Allah has promised that He will
compile the Qur’an for us, then He complied it an actual compilation that has
never happened to any of the divinely revealed Books from the heavens, or an
author on earth. You would not get a house without seeing Qur’an in it compiled
in it. Then “its compilation” that Allah had promised us, we have seen it as
Allah Almighty have promised us. “its recitation”, he promised us that this
Book must be recited. Then this Book was recited an actual recitation which
none of the books recited by people were recited similar to it. So Muslims read
it, none Muslims read it, the iron read it and everything read it.
You would hardly have a radio station, even in Paris, the enemies of Islam,
even in London, the enemies of Islam, even in Israel, even at the niche of the
sacred papacy of Pope. You would not find an Arabic language radio broadcasting
station that commences its transmission unless after the Qur’an is recited.
This is as Allah has promised us that the Qur’an would be recited. It was also
recited a genuine recitation that none of the books were ever read like it.
"Then on to us belongs its elucidation or explanation”.
He has promised the explanation of the Qur’an, then He interpreted the Qur’an
also an interpretation which none of the books of tafsir or interpretation and
places of interpretation right from time of the Prophet[PBUH] until our present
day would much up to it.
FOOT NOTE COMMENTARY: Analyzing sources of Ahadith...
Abu Abdul Rahman
Al-Salami said: Those who used to read [the Qur'an] to us have narrated to us
that: Usman bun Affan and Abdulahi bun Mas’ud and others whenever they learnt
ten verses from the Prophet[PBUH], they would not exceed it until they would
learn what it entails of knowledge and action, they said: Then we learnt the
Qur’an with knowledge and action. Al-Qasimi Tafsir, vol. 4/780.
Ibun 'Ataeyah said: Many great number of the past generation [scholars] used to
interpret the Qur’an. And they have left Muslim on that legacy, may Allah be
pleased with them. But as for the source and the supporter among them is Aliyu
bun Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with him. Abdallah bun Abbass also used to
recite it…and the rest of the scholars followed him…And Ibn Abass said: I have
never received [knowledge] of the Qur’anic interpretation but from Ali may
Allah be pleased with him. Aliyu bun Abi Talib used to commend or praise the
tafsir book of Ibn Abbas…And Ibn Abbass used to quote the messenger of
Allah[PBUH]: Ibn Abbass is a worthy interpreter of the Qur’an. And Aliyu bun
Abi Talib said: Ibn Abbass[interprets] as if he was gazing at the [divine]
unseen which covers "raqeeq" [the one who has no father no
mother]…And Abdullah bun Mas’ud and Ubaiyi bun Ka’b and Zaid bun Thabit and
Abdallah bun Amru bunul ‘Aas used to recite for him for
interpretation....Tafsir Al-Qurttubi, vol.1/35.
Ten companions became popular in the field of [tafsir] exegesis: The four
Khaliphs, then Ibn Abbass , Ibn Mas’ud. Ibn Ka’ab, Zaid Bun Thabit, Abu Mushal
‘Ash’ariyu and Abdulahi bun Zubair/ Al-Itqan in the Knoweledge of Al-Qur’an for
Imam Suyyuti, vol. 4/204...
And Qurtubi said after the narration of names of some tafsir scholars among the
comapnions and the (tabi'een) next generation:...Then generations on
interpretation of the Book of Allah Almighty is unbreakable for all the
successive generation. As the Prophet[PBUH] said: (This knowledge is carried
without breaking it by successive generations, which would debunk the
distortions of extremists...and the plagiarism of the falsehood fellowers. And
the interpretation of the ignorant).
It was narrated by Abu Amru and others. Atibul Bagdadi said: And this is a
testimony from the Prophet[PBUH] that they are the scholars of the religion and
the Imams of Muslims for their protection of the Shariah from getting
plagiarized for a false one and to debunk the interpretation of the ignorant,
for it is a must to be returned to them to let them shoulder the responsibility
of religious affairs, may Allah be pleased with them. Tafsir Al-Qurtubi vol.
1/36.

Assalamu Alaikum brothers and sisters in Islam,
Ramadan Mubarak to everyone. Today happens to be third day of Ramadan, we
proceed with the translation of the Tafsir of Maulana Sheikh Ibrahim Niass
which we themed:
"التأملاتالقرآنيةفيروضةالرمضانية"
"QURANIC
CONTEMPLATION IN THE GARDEN OF RAMADAN",
We continue from
where we left off yesterday in his book entitled:
"فيرياضالتفسير"
"IN THE SHADOW
OF EXEGESIS"
In the next two pages
below, Maulana Baye Niass would take readers through the names of Allah in the
Qur'an as well as the Shaitan and how to seek refuge from him.
LESSON ONE{3}
And Qur’anic
Interpretation is a knowledge and it is the most prestigious knowledge. Because
the[level of] prestige of every knowledge depends on the magnitude of its
relationship [with that knowledge].
And this is the word
of Allah, it is compared with how Allah relates to his creatures. And it is the
most prestigious of the entire knowledge.
So the Qur’an has
numerous names, and abundance of names indicates the level of prestige of the
owner of the name. Fifty five names came up from the Qur’an as names of the
Qur’an. It is Al-Qur’an [Recital], Al-Zikru [Remembrace], Aayaatu
Bayyinaat[Proven Signs].
However, all these
names when you think deep in its meaning, you would return to its two names
they are Al-Qur’an [Recital], Al-Furqan [Criterion].
Just as when you
think in it, all of it returns to Majesty and Magnificence. So the Qur’an is
from the root word “qur’u”, that means unanimity. And Furqan is from the root
word “farq”, that means dissimilarity.
So the servant [of
Allah] must bring together both unanimity and dissimilarity. So whoever does
not have differences would not have submissiveness [in worship], and whoever
does not have unanimity, would not have [divine] knowledge.
And there are two
forms of differences: A dissimilarity is an absorption with the creature
thereby keeping distance from the Truthful [Allah] Almighty, this is a veiling
[off from divine vision]. And dissimilarity is the knowledge of creature
through the Truthful [Allah] “He has created the heavens and the earth with the
Truth”.
And this
dissimilarity that returns to a servant after his extinction is an absolute
perfection, because he gives the right to whoever is due and to extend to the
lucky or blessed one his fair share of blessings. So no dissimilarity would
veil him from his unanimity nor its unanimity would veil him from him
dissimilarity. We have therefore summarized on the analysis of two names among
the names of the Qur’an, and they are: Al-Qur’an [Recital] and Al-Furqan
[Criterion]
The Qur’an is a
manifestation of unanimity which is the manifestation of the oneness where is
nothing other than him Almighty. He is Allah the [only] One. And the Furqan is
the manifestation of dissimilarity “There is nothing like him and He is all
hearing and all seeing”.
{{I seek refuge with
Allah from the accursed devil}} The wisdom behind starting the Qur’anic
recitation with these words is because getting entry into the divine kingdom
requires knocking on the door and requires permission [to be granted] as well.
And whenever the presenter wants to begin reading the words of Allah Almighty,
he [automatically] begins to enter into the presence of Allah Almighty invoking
him with his words.
That is why it needs
cleansing and he needs to cleanse his tongue with his saying:
I seek refuge with
Allah from the accursed devil. Allah Almighty has said: “When you are about to
read the Qur’an, seek refuge from the accursed devil”.
{{I seek refuge with
Allah from the accursed devil}}The messenger of Allah may the peace and
blessings of Allah be upon him said: (This is how Jibril taught me from the
tablet from the pen from the Lord Almighty). So this tone is more virtuous than
the tones of seeking refuge.
{{I seek refuge}}I
turned towards Allah Almighty, I seek help {{with Allah}}Almighty {{From the
devil}} that is the devil. The Satan who [shaitan] keeps a distance [from
someone]. And Iblees or devil used to be a devoted servant to Allah Almighty
[as it will come in his tale tomorrow in Suratul Baqarah], then he was evicted
and cursed and distanced from the Allah’s presence. So he was named Shaitan and
named Iblees after his name was ‘Azazee. And {{The accursed}} means tossed away
from the presence of Allah Almighty. He was thrown out of Paradise, thrown out
of the heaven and thrown out of the mercy of Allah Almighty.
{{I seek refuge from
Allah from the accursed Satan}. Seeking of refuge of a servant with Allah is a
cognizance upon the Majesty [of Allah] from the Satan about whom Allah taught
us that he is our enemy. And commanded us to consider him as an enemy. And to
consider the enemy an enemy is to confined yourself away from him and seek
refuge from him.
And the servant has
no one but his Lord. He returns to his Lord and returns towards Allah by
seeking refuge with him from the evil of this creature who is [Iblees] the
devil.
FOOT NOTE
COMMENTATRY:
1- It was narrated
from Ibn Mas’ud that he said: I said I seek refuge with Allah the most hearing
and the most seeing from the accursed devil, and the Prophet[PBUH] said to me:
(O you the son of Ummu Abd “I seek refuge with Allah from the accursed devil”,
this was how Jibril read to me from Lauhul Mahfuz[The Divinely Protected
Tablet], from the Pen) Al-Qurtubi 1/87.
2- It was mentioned
by Ibn Qutaibah in Ma’aarif page 14, second edition[Darul Ma’aarif] and Qurtubi
said in his Tafsir: His name [devil] used to be Siryaniyah, ‘Azazeel and in
Arabic, Al-Haris vol. 1/295.

We continue from
where we left off yesterday in his book entitled:
"فيرياضالتفسير"
"IN THE SHADOW OF EXEGESIS"
In the next three pages below, Maulana Baye Niass would take readers through
some narratives about the whispering of the devil.
LESSON ONE{4}
Once a student has
been frequenting [going to] a scholar in Khursan until he memorized from him
4000 wisdoms. So when he finally said goodbye to him to return back to his
country he said to him: I will teach you something better than all what you
have of wisdoms. Do you have a devil in your country? He said: Yes. He said:
Does he whisper to you? He said to him: Yes. He said to him: When the enemy of
Allah whispers to you what do you do? He said: We respond to him. He said: When
he returns? He said: We respond to him. He said: When he returns again? He
said: We respond to him. He said to him: You cannot be able to [continuously]
respond to him, “He and his tribe see you from where you do not see them” However
when the enemy of Allah whispers to you behave like a visitor when the dog of
the house barks at him, he would be moving nearer the house owner, he would not
face the dog himself. So for you when the devil whispers to you turn toward his
Lord [Allah], he would prevent you from his evil scheme. Say: I seek refuge
from the accursed devil”.1
I seek refuge with Allah from the accursed devil: There are different parts of
evils: evil that relates to the faith of a man or disbelieve of innovation or
immorality, either big or small. All these misfortunes are in the religion of
man or a misfortune in the body of the servant [of Allah]: Sickness or time, or
weaknesses, or laziness or temper.
Or in what a servant has, such as sickness of children, death of children and
lost of wealth. All these are tragedies. When a servant seeks refuge with
Allah, he intends to seeks protection of Allah from all his evils that affect
his act of worship and the evil that effects his body, and the evil that affect
what he has earned from Allah Almighty of blessings. It was said that a form of
refuge seeking is a contrast to knowledge. Because the fear of anyone apart
from Allah is not pleasing to the divine knowers(of Allah) themselves, because
they do not see anyone other than Allah Almighty.
But this is a moral code for dealing with Allah Almighty where He commanded
with it. And the servant must always see his short comings and neediness in
front of his creator. If he wishes he would be coercive on another. However in
the domain of his creator, he is a poor, weak and incapable to do everything.
Even the devil seeks to get nearer to Allah Almighty because he is incapable of
withstanding is expulsion .They said: Fear Allah Almighty for the severity of
his punishment. And fear the one who fears Allah Almighty for his prayer. And
fear the one who does not fear Allah, because he does not fear anything and
does not waver from anything. 2
Hence, seeking for Allah’s forgiveness is a reinforcement with Allah and a
manifestation of neediness and humility in front of the creator until He
protects him from this enemy. And knowledge is not clarified but ethics with
Allah Almighty. And whoever does not see the devil due to his position, he does
not need to recite the “Isti’azah” or seeking of refuge. Some knowers of Allah
are saying, we are people who do not know the devil, and Allah says, “Verily my
servant has no power over them”.
The Prophet [PBUH] was asked about the whispering of the devil in prayer. He
said: (That is an untainted form of faith). Because a thief would not enter
into a house that has nothing in it. The none believers and hypocrites do not
see [feel] whispering of the devil, because the devil have finished with them.
Whoever sees the whispering is a true believer. He gets the whispering because,
the enemy does not fight anyone except the one who hates him, but whoever is in
agreement with him does not need his refuge.
The messenger of Allah [PBUH] left home to the mosque and the devil met him,
and said to him: What brought to you to my mosque here? You have to ask me: He
said: Who is the most hateful man to you? He said to him:You. He then said to
him: Then who? A young person who grew up in the obedience of Allah Almighty.
He said to him: Why do you prevent my ummah [society] from attending group
prayer? He said: Because, whenever they are in prayer I remain nervous until
they finish and disperse from the mosque. He said: why do you prevent them from
fasting? He said: When Ramadan comes, I get restricted and chained, I could not
move during Ramadan. He said: Why do you present them from Jihad [driving in
the course of Allah? He said: I place a manacle or bond that would not
encourage them to go and fight. He said: Why do you prevent my society from
giving to charity? He said: I mark the amount [of money] they are giving and
make them agitated until I could not prevent them from giving to charity. Then
the Prophet [PBUH] took him with his shoulder and tied him on the wall of the
mosque. Then he asked him to leave him until dawn where all people would gather
to be looking at him. After which [The Prophet(PBUH)] remembered the saying of
[Prophet] Sulaiman may the peace of Allah be upon him, “And grant me a kingdom
that nobody would have its kind after me”, so the Prophet[PBUH] learnt some
lessons with Sulaiman and he released him.
FOOT NOTES COMMENTARY:
1-Review this debate
in the Tafsir “Ruhul Bayyan”, “Spirit of Elucidation” vol.1/6
2-It was narrated
from Ali bun Abi Talib may Allah be pleased with him, that he said to his son
Hassan may Allah be leased with him: O my son be fearful of three things: Fear
Allah, fear the one who fears Allah, and fear your tongue, it is your enemy in
your religion, Allah would protect you from the all things that you fear. Part
of the advice of the messenger of Allah [PBUH] vol. 1/877.
3-It came in Sahih of
Imamu Muslim: Kitabul Eeman/ [book of faith], a section explaining whispering
in faith and what the one who receives whispering would say: On the authority
of Abdullah who said: (The Prophet[PBUH] was asked about whispering and he said
such is the exhortation of faith”.
4-Narrated from Ibn
Abbass may Allah be pleased with him[ Was already narrated up here but this is
the continuation]:…And the Prophet[PBUH] said: Why do you prevent them from
performing Hajj [Pilgrimage]? He said: When they left for Hajj I would chain
and cheat them. And when they intend to give charity, a chain saw is placed on
top of my head to split me as it splits the wood.
5- It came in Shih of
Al-Bukhari: Kitabul Salat…(461)...narrated by Abu Hurair who said: The Prophet
[PBUH] said: (Ifreet amongst the Jinnis slipped by yesterday or something like
that to interrupt the prayer. Then Allah gave me the strength over him. Then I
wanted to tie him with a pole among the poles of the mosque until you [the
Muslims] would wake up, then I remembered the words of my brother Sulaiman, “O
Lord grant me a kingdom that nobody would have its kind after me.”. And it was
narrated by Muslim in his authenticated book: The book of mosques and places of
prayer/a section on cursing the devil in the midst of prayer.(842).

Assalamu Alaikum brothers and sisters in Islam, Ramadan
Mubarak to everyone. Today happens to be 14th day of Ramadan and we proceed
with the translation of the Tafsir of Maulana Sheikh Ibrahim Niass which we
themed:
"التأملات القرآنية في روضة الرمضانية"
"QURANIC CONTEMPLATION IN THE GARDEN OF
RAMADAN"
We continue from where we left off last time in his
book entitled:
"في رياض التفسير"
"IN THE GARDEN OF EXEGESIS"
The next two pages here is the continuation of of
Suratul Fatiha or Opening Chapter of the Qur'an, Maulana Baye Niass gave us a
narrative history of a group of sahabah or companions of the Prophet [PBUH],
who had used suratul fatiha as a means of ruqiyyah or exorcist healing and were
paid with flocks of sheep. And he also revealed to us how the entire divinely
revealed Books were encapsulated in the Qur'an, and particularly, in suratul
fatiha.
LESSON TWO {2}
And a group of the companions of the messenger of
Allah [PBUH] had travelled and pitched a camp at a neighborhood as part of the
Arab neighborhoods. They requested for dinner and it was not brought to them.
They were denied food. So at night, the leader of the village was stung by a
snake and they (his people) came to the guests and asked them: Do you have a
healer or an exorcist? One of them said: Yes I do heal or exorcise, but we
requested for dinner from you but you did not give us. So we will not exorcise
for you [for free] until you give us money. They said: How much? He said:
Flocks of sheep. And they gave them the sheep. So he recited suratul fatiha
upon the leader and the poisonous fluid from the snake vanished and he was
healed instantly.
Then the man said: I will drive the flocks of sheep to
the messenger of Allah [PBUH] to ask him whether it is halal [lawful] or haram
[unlawful]. So he came to the Prophet [PBUH] and informed him about the
incident. Then the Prophet [PBUH] asked him: (But how would you know that it a
ruqqiyah [a means of exorcism]? Divide the flocks among your friends, and leave
me a share of it). So he realized that it was halal [lawful]. So that was why
this Surah is also refers to as ruqqiyah1.
And it was narrated from the messenger of Allah [PBUH]
that Allah has revealed 140 Books: 50 Books upon Sheeth bun Adam [PBUH], and 30
Books upon Iddriss Akhnukh, 10 Books upon Ibrahim, 10 Books upon Musah before
the Torah, and the Torah, Zabur, Injeel and Furqah 2.
And all these Books have been compiled in four, and
these four were compiled in Al-Furqan [Criteria] (Al-Qur’an). And the entire
Al-Furqan was compiled in suratul fatiha. So whoever read suratul fatiha, it
would seem as if he has read the entire Qur’an. And would also seem as if he
has read the entire four Books. And would as well seem as if he has read the
entire divinely revealed Books1. And it constitutes the entire Qur’an.
The Qur’an constitutes nine areas of specialties:
The area of gratitude. You would come across a verse
in the Qur’an that expresses gratitude to Allah in many instances and praises
him and in the field of promise and threat. You will find in the Qur’an shariah
[divine law] and haqiqah [divine reality]. You would find in the Qur’an prayer.
You would find in the Qur’an history from the historical narratives of the
medieval era. And you would find in the Qur’an sermons and admonition and
goodness and oneness [of Allah].
“Al-Hamdulilah”, {Praise be to Allah} constitute what
belong to Allah of praise in the Qur’an and it is from the root word, he
thanked and expressed gratitude. Whatever is in the Qur’an regarding praises
upon Allah and of eulogies “Alhamdulilah” has engrossed, entranced and
enthralled all(other matters). “Lord of the Worlds”- Tawheed - oneness, “The
Merciful the Beneficent”- promise. “Master of the Day of Judgement” - threat,
“You do we worship and to you we seek help” – Shariah [divine law], “Upon you
we seek help” – Haqiqah [divine reality], “Guide us to the straight path” –
prayer, “The path of those whom you have bestowed your favors upon – history,
“Not the path of those whom have earned your anger nor the path of those who
have gone astray” – sermon and admonition.
FOOT NOTES COMMENTARY:
1 The hadith was mentioned earlier. In page 4.
2- It came in Musnad Abi Zarr in Jami’ul Kabir he said:
I said O messenger of Allah how many books did Allah reveal? He said: (Hundred
and four Books. Allah revealed upon Sheeth five Books, He revealed upon Akhnukh
(Iddriss) thirty Books. And ten Books upon Musah before Torah ten Books and he
revealed Torah, Bible, Psalm and Frur’qan [Qur’an]). Musnad Abi Zarr,
Al-Jami’ul Kabir. vol.2/646-647.
3- Hassanul Basri said: Allah had deposited the entire
ancient knowledge in the Qur’an, then He deposited the knowledge of the Qur’an
in suratul fatiha. So whoever knows its interpretation, he would be like he
knows the interpretation of the entire divinely revealed Books. It was compiled
by Al-Baihaqi. Al-Itqan, vol. 4/120.
- And some divine knowers of Allah said that, the
entire content of the Books that came before the Qur’an were deposited under
suratul fatiha, deposited under Basmalah and deposited under the dot ‘ba’, and
they contain all [ the divine] facts and minutes. Hazeenatul Asraar for
Nazili/page 88, and Tafsir Ruhul Bayaan vol. 1/4.
4- Imamu Ibn Jaziyi said in his Tafsir: Kitabul
Tasheelil-‘ulumul Tanzeel, vol. 1/34 in the statement about fatiha: Benefit
Number Twenty: This surah encompassed the entire meanings of the great Qur’an.
It seems like an abridged version from it. So you hope for it to be a collection
of section six in the first introduction. You would know what it holds in
divinity in his (Allah's) saying, “All praise be to Allah Lord of the Worlds
the Beneficent the Merciful”. And the last day in his saying: “Master of the
Day of Judgment”. And the entire acts of worship in the believes and provisions
that require commands and prohibitions in his saying: “You alone we worship”,
And the entire Shariah where He says: “The straight path”. And the entire
prophets and others in his saying: “Those whom you have bestowed your blessings
upon”. And he mentioned some groups of none believers in his saying: “Not those
who have earned your anger nor those who have gone astray.”
